Alice Strobl, 1980: Studien für das Kind oberhalb der linken Schulter des Mannes
Sotheby´s New York, 2021: This double sided drawing was created as a study for Medicine, which belonged to Klimt’s series of University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings, otherwise known as his Faculty Paintings. He painted this series for the ceiling of the Great Hall at University of Vienna alongside Philosophy and Jurisprudence between 1900-07. Upon creation, these paintings caused quite a controversy for their opulent and sensual qualities and therefore were never erected on the ceiling nor displayed at the University. In March of 1901, Klimt presented Medicine at the 10th exhibition of the Vienna Secession. The various figures in the work represent different periods of life from a newborn infant to a skeleton. The present drawing shows various iterations of studies for both the infant figure above the central woman’s head and the male figure bending over on the right. Unfortunately, in May of 1945, Nazi troops set fire to the building in which the paintings were housed and therefore all that remain of them are preparatory sketches, such as the present work, and few photographs.
