The present work is a study for the 1907 masterpiece Danaë, which represents the conception of Perseus by Zeus and the King of Argos' daughter and was in fact Klimt's final depiction of Greek mythology. Danaë was used as a popular motif by many of the Symbolist artists of the early 1900s as she was the quintessential subject of divine love and transcendence. As with many studies by Klimt, the work is overtly sensual and erotic, emphasised through the prominent bare thighs the model tucks into her chest. The studies for Danaë are particularly voyeuristic as Klimt requested his models fall into exposed, more vulnerable positions. His decision to depict Danaë's expression as one of enjoyment and passion was very provocative and caused great uproar at the time, considered almost pornographic in nature. This particular work was executed with brown crayon, a medium that Klimt used very rarely and one that is found only in his drawings from 1903; the present work is a very fine example of this practice.
