    Die Studie steht mit dem Bildnis eines alten Mannes (Novotny-Dobai Nr. 73) im Zusammenhang, das 1959 in der Klimt-Ausstellung der Galerie St Etienne ausgestellt war, und dort mit ca. 1896 datiert ist (siehe oben). Die Studie könnte bereits 1894/95 entstanden sein, da sie mit den Entwürfen für das Gemälde "Liebe" 1895 (Novotny-Dobai Nr. 68) stilistisch übereinstimmt. Vgl. Kat. Nr. I/261

    Des Moines (Iowa), Des Moines Art Center:
    The Art Center's drawing was executed in charcoal on paper. Although undated, both in subject and style the work is typical of Klimt's drawing style of the mid-1890s. While the artist's later drawings are characterized by expressive contours, evocative chiaroscuro effects predominate in the earlier work. In addition, studies of elderly bearded men are not uncommon in Klint's work of the period. Because we view the figure from below, the work may have been a preparatory study for one of the University of Vienna murals, upon which Klimt worked often after 1893.
