My paternal grandother (née Caitlin Galvin [Waterville, County Kerry Ireland] at various times, later, she used both Katherine and Kathleen) worked in the household of Otto Zuckerkandl. Through this association, she became acquainted with Berta Zuckerkandl and her artistic salons. It was at these salons that my grandmother made the acquaintance of Gustav Klimt. She maintained not only that this work was given to her by the artist but that she was the last person to see him alive. She came tot he U.S. in ca. 1937 with my grandfather, Erich W. Lenk [née Löwenberg [Vienna, 1892], he changed the family name in 1930), and my father and uncle.
My brother and I both share the belief, based on a contemporary photograph of our grandmother, that she may have posed for a painting by Klimt as well.
